Finance Buddy is a personal budgeting app. This policy explains, plainly, what data it collects, why, and where it goes — including when you ask it to read a bank statement for you.
Overview
Finance Buddy helps you track income, expenses, savings goals, and recurring payments. The app is built by an independent developer, not a bank or financial institution, and it does not connect to your bank accounts directly. All figures — balances, transactions, goals — are the ones you enter yourself, or that you approve after importing a statement file.
We collect only what the app needs to function: your account credentials, the financial entries you create, and, if you use the statement import feature, the file you choose to upload for that one-time recognition step.
Data we collect
The table below lists every category of data the app handles.
| Category | Examples | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Account data | Email address, encrypted password, account creation date | You, at sign-up |
| Financial entries | Transactions, categories, savings goals, recurring payments, home currency | Entered manually, or confirmed after statement import |
| Statement files | PDF, CSV, or XLSX bank statement you choose to upload | You, only if you use Import from statement |
| Device & diagnostics | Crash logs, app version, OS version | Automatically, to keep the app working |
We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, camera access, or advertising identifiers. Finance Buddy shows no ads and does not sell data.
Statement import
The Import from statement feature is optional and only runs when you pick a file. Here is exactly what happens to it:
- The file you select is sent, over an encrypted connection, to a parsing server operated by the developer.
- The server extracts the text of the statement and sends that text to DeepSeek, a third-party AI provider, to identify individual transactions (date, amount, description, suggested category).
- The recognized transactions are returned to your device as a draft list — nothing is saved to your account until you review it and tap Import.
- The original file and its extracted text are not stored on the parsing server after the request completes.
In short: a statement file you upload is processed to produce a list of transactions, then discarded. It is not retained, sold, or used to train models beyond DeepSeek's standard API processing described in their own policy.
If you'd rather not use this feature, every transaction can be entered by hand — statement import is never required.
How we use it
Data is used strictly to run the app's features:
- Authenticating you and keeping your account secure.
- Storing and displaying your transactions, categories, goals, and recurring payments.
- Generating scheduled recurring transactions on the date you configure.
- Converting between currencies using your recorded exchange rate at the time of entry.
- Diagnosing crashes so the app can be fixed.
We do not use your financial data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond operating the app for you.
Storage & security
Your account and financial data are stored in a managed Postgres database with row-level security, meaning the database itself enforces that you can only ever read or write your own records. Connections between the app, the database, and the statement parsing server are encrypted in transit.
No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we apply industry-standard practices — encrypted connections, access-scoped credentials, and no local storage of your password — to protect your information.
Retention & deletion
Your financial entries are kept for as long as your account exists. Uploaded statement files and the text extracted from them are not retained once a parsing request completes — see Statement import.
You may delete individual transactions, goals, or categories at any time from within the app. To delete your account and all associated data entirely, contact us using the details in Contact; we will remove your records within 30 days.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, reach out via the contact details below — we will respond within a reasonable timeframe and at no cost for reasonable requests.
Children
Finance Buddy is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Effective" date at the top of this page will be updated. Material changes — for example, adding a new data-sharing partner — will be highlighted at the top of the app on first launch after the change.
